May 23rd, 24th - Leaving Venice for home

This is the final post for the Italy 2006 voyage. It is our last day in Venice. These are the final feelings of Venice, probably too many pictures.

We walked from the hotel through the San Marco area to cross the Rialto bridge to the other side of the Grand Canal. Back through the twists and turns of narrow streets and route changes to access bridges over canals all the way to Academia bridge. As we stroll along, we suddenly see the Grand Canal from a bridge crossing a smaller side canal.

Another surprise is a view of wisteria growing along the balcony of a small restaurant. The sights of Venice are astounding.

After re-crossing at Academia, we strolled (for the 3rd or 4th time) through the area between the Grand Canal and our hotel.

Then really lost (again) behind the Fenice. The Fenice opera house is somewhere in here amid a strange crisscross of small canals where this picture was taken. Even with a map we have trouble getting this part of Venice figured out.

We had a lovely lunch at the other restaurant on the Fenice square. We were here last night at Antico Martini, but lunch at the Ristorante al Theatro is much better.

Back to the hotel to pick up our luggage. Drag the luggage over the two bridges to San Marco, through the square one last time (there are now more than 1000 people with us). Take a water bus to Marco Polo airport and a cab to the Marriott hotel.

Up at 4 am the next morning and away to Paris and then Toronto. Must go back some day soon.

Wisteria! OK, that's really weird. Just the other night someone mentioned that they'd started a trumpet and banjo band and needed a name for it, and I said "Wisteria" and then had to admit that I didn't actually know what it was but that it sounded better than "Dieffenbachia" (although that one's been growing on me [REALLY no pun intended] since then). Then, the next time I pick up the Proust book I've been reading for almost a year now holy crap where does the time go and why is so little of it devoted to reading the greats, he starts going on and on about wisteria. Weird enough on its own, but now this?! Why, I have half a mind to look up just what this mysterious plant is. Maybe if it happens again...

Venice looks gorgeous -- just like in the movies. Having to leave at 4 in the morning is definitely a case of "insult to injury".

I hope the fact that the Italy story is over doesn't mean that the blog one is. I've really been enjoying it.

Glad you're enjoying the blog, And. I think you're the only one leaving a comment. ( Maybe no one else knows how.) We have been growing wisteria around our arbour in the backyard. It is a type which should grow in this climate but takes many years before flowering. This year, it looked really close - so we're hopeful for next year. We loved seeing it in Venice.

Wow, this was a restaurant very close to our hotel and Spanish steps. We ate two nights in a row. The food and the wine was just great. To spend the calories consumed, we walked the Spanish steps up and down before going back to the hotel. There are 101 steps up to the top of the Spanish steps from the restaurant side. It is funny that you took a picture of it.
