Cloudy day, decide on big drive up the autoroute from Chiusi to Arezzo. Weather got better as we got further north. As here, you don't see very much of the country from the autoroutes. Here there are frequent tunnels through mountains and high bridges over deep valleys.Spent most of the day in Arezzo, watched school kids on an outing playing in the square, discovered the strangest automated washroom that is completely flushed after use - the whole room!
We had lunch at a lovely restaurant. There were several behind the pillars overlooking the main old town square.
We went to the tourist info office to get detailed maps and a recorded description of the main sights. Used the recorded walk from the tourist info. Great rig keyed to the town map.The walking tour takes you all over Arezzo, up and down the hilly streets of the old town.
There are many churches and some old homes of interest either because of the architecture or because of the former occupants.
The main church is the big cathedral at the top of the hill This is some of the detail.
Then, behind the cathedral, there is a lovely park with vistas of the surrounding countryside and the more modern areas of Arezzo.
As always, stop for wine, cheese, trinkets. The people are always very pleased to tell you about their local wines and why they are absolutely the best. And they all seem to be right!
Late in the afternoon we headed south on red & yellow roads to Cortona. Nice drive until we climb up the switchbacks into Cortona. Penny is not amused.
We have too little time in Cortona, but Penny wanted to see it because of the Year in Tuscany books.
