We left Bologna in the morning and headed to Basilica di St. Lucia on the outskirts. This is a monastery / retreat of some local repute. The climb up the stairs through the arches, 666 of them, is well over a kilometer. There were a couple of groups doing a mass climb complete with one member carrying a flag / poster / image of a priest or monk, and another member leading the chant / response in Latin.This is a travel day from Bologna to our villa in San Albino in the Montipulciano region. After St. Lucia we found the toll highway - autoroute - south toward Firenze and then another toward Arezzo (the main road from Milan to Rome). This is now Toscana. We had lunch and strolled around Arezzo, bought some cheese and wine (this becomes pretty much a daily activity from here on), and plan to return to Arezzo later this week.
Back on the road south from Arezzo to Chiusi - Chanciano Terme - San Albino and the villa. We are 4 km outside the old hilltop town of Montipulciano. It is amazing.
Relax, meet Laura, the lady who owns & runs the villa, and some other guests. Three buildings housing 3 or 4 families. Ours is the smallest and is perfect! Open, bright, airy and very comfortable. Room for another person with ease. More than meets expectations, we are thrilled!
The villa is on a small vinyard. There is a small olive orchard up the hill, and we can easily walk into the town of San Albino for supplies, local restaurants and the like. I wonder why the place is named after Saint Colourless?
